Merced Kid Typeface

The design driver for the typeface was the historic Park Merced neighborhood in San Francisco. Located next to SFSU, Park Merced is made up of old buildings and towers with grungy graffiti most likely made by the nearby students. The tagging styles observed are not complex and are completed quickly. "Merced Kid" emulates sharp, irregular, overlapping strokes found compiled in the neighborhood's local tags.

To recreate the local graffiti, I acquired a variety of tagging supplies. Different styles were experimented with until desirable sequences of forms were produced. Once a favored style was selected, the best raw forms were digitalized.
